The Edgeless iPhone could be in development

By : Ali Ergal   /

In the nine-year and nine generation history of the iPhone one design trait has remained unchanged. Each and every iPhone has had a small (or large as things went on) screen which ended before the edge of the device, but according to sources, all this could change next year.

2017 will see Apple celebrate the tenth anniversary of the iPhone. Coinciding with this will be the announcement of the iPhone 8 and with that release, John Gruber, speaking on his podcast The Talk Show, expects to see some big design changes.

The big design change he predicts will be a sensational Edgeless display, he states; “I've heard this independently and it is completely getting rid of the chin and forehead of the phone,”

“The entire face will be the display. And the Touch ID sensor will be somehow embedded in the display. The front-facing camera will somehow be embedded in the display. The speaker, everything. All the sensors will somehow be behind the display.”

This would be a monumental step forward not only for Apple but all Smartphone technology. It seems, from an outside perspective of the secretive development labs at Apple HQ, it will be a challenge to create the edgeless display with the current size of the large iPhone 6s model but Gruber is unsure if the device will change in scale;

“What I don’t know, and I have no idea, is whether that means that they’re going to shrink the actual thing in your hand to fit the screen sizes we already have, or whether they’re going to grow the screens to fit the devices we’re already used to holding… I don’t know.”

We personally can’t wait to see if this concept ends up being released on the iPhone 8 but until then we’ll turn our attention to the upcoming iPhone 7…
